Chew, chew and chew again
Many of us have struggled with bloating in the past and often blame it on the meal we just ate, but is what we ate the only the reason for the bloating or should we consider the way we ate?
Chewing is the first step in digestion, breaking down food into smaller fragments. Chewing produce saliva which helps to not aggravate the oesophagus when swallowing. As you chew digestive enzymes are produced to further breakdown the food and it triggers the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, helping your stomach to digest and metabolise the food. If the food is not properly chewed larger particles enter the gut and can cause gas, bloating, constipation, food reactions, headaches and fatigue.
If your food is not properly broken down by chewing you leave more work for digestive system. Larger food particles can cause bacterial overgrowth and increased fermentation leading to many gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, constipation, indigestion and gas.
By properly chewing your food you will get more bang for your buck. Smaller food particles will make it easier for your body to absorb more vitamins and minerals from the food you are eating. Which will most likely contribute to improved overall health.
Properly chewing your food can also help with portion control. By eating slower, you will realise sooner that you are full and be less likely to over-eat.
Therefore, if you are struggling with any gut issues, maybe try chewing your properly first, before you go on a long journey of eliminating and reintroducing foods from your diet. By properly chewing your you will take care of your gut health which is closely linked to your overall health.
Happy chewing everyone.
